Deliverables for Mining Functional Safety Projects

You don’t get, what you don’t ask for

When auditing Functional Safety projects for compliance to the applicable standards, we often find the owner assumed all the necessary documentation would be delivered as part of the work, just because they listed a few standards in their Scope of Work or Contract with the vendor.

It is easy to fall into this trap, especially when dealing with international vendors who in most cases are not particularly familiar with our Australian Standards.

Below is a typical example of required deliverables for a ‘machinery’ project to help you get started:

  • Functional Safety Management Plan that meets the requirements of AS 62061:2006, AS 61508.1:2011 or ISO 9001:2015 (to be issued at the beginning of the project)
  • Risk Assessment Plan and Report that meets the requirements of AS 4024.1201:2014 using your tolerable risk criteria
  • Safety Requirements Specification that meets the requirements of AS 4024.1503:2014 or AS 62061:2006
  • Technical Documentation that meets the requirements of AS 4024.1503:2014 or AS 62061:2006 – often a point of contention, suggest discussing upfront with the vendor exactly what design information will be provided, the less you have, the more difficult it may be to make modifications in future
  • Verification & Test Plan and Report (AS 61508.1:2011 Lifecycle Phases, Hardware and Software)
  • Validation Plan and Report that meets the requirements of AS 4024.1502:2006 or AS 62061:2006
  • Functional Safety Assessments – recommend specifying an Australian based vendor to undertake this independent assessment
  • Information for use according to Clause 11 of AS 4024.1503:2014 or AS 62061:2006
    • Operations and Maintenance Manual
    • Work Instructions (testing, replacement etc.)
    • Preventative Maintenance Strategy, Instructions and Proof Testing Procedures etc.
