GTE completed the re-design of a client’s core process control network switch infrastructure at both their mine and port sites. GTE has also completed the re-design of the distribution network infrastructure at their port.

The industrial process control networks we worked on provide communications for critical operational equipment such as stackers, reclaimers, conveyors and car dumpers. Approximately 100 network switches (CISCO IE4010, IE5000, 9500) were upgraded and GTE identified over 300 drawings that were impacted by the design changes. GTE were able to provide a turnkey solution by drafting all of the necessary drawing changes.

The project design included a change to the existing architecture to support a Layer 3 environment which allowed for improved network segregation and future growth capacity. The design factored in migration strategies for critical communications equipment to minimise interruption to operational plant. To mitigate any production outage risks during commissioning extensive testing was undertaken to ensure the proposed hardware and software were fit for purpose. We also conducted extensive compatibility testing with other process control network equipment and to identify any potential issues prior to commissioning.
